. This family tree is a hymn in memory of our ancestors and other deceased relatives. It will help us to remember their names better. We will thus be able to convey them to the future generations. It will also help us to know the existence of our cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, grandfathers and grandmothers, all over the world. Uniting and fraternizing, such is also the noble purpose of this family tree.
. In the past, Malagasy parents did not systematically give their children the father's patronymic name nor that of the mother. Within the same family, every child could have different patronymic names. This may often sound odd and confusing to Westerners and often leaves them perplexed and disconcerted, but this custom also had the noble purpose of perpetuating the memory of a late relative. Further explanations on this question can be found in the most interesting article "Why are Malagasy names so long ?" http://www.slateafrique.com/829/pourquoi-noms-malgaches-si-longs. . For coherence's sake, we have exceptionally restored the original long form of some expatriates' shortened or westernized names. . There exists a splendid "paper version" of this family tree on a special, precious 85 x105 paper from Egypt. It is a real masterpiece which will be displayed in the house of one of us. . RAINDRAOTO (1801 — 1919), son of Rarabo and Ramatoa Razakamanana, was a very wealthy, influential figure. He financed a large part of the building of the Protestant Church of Amparibe Famonjena, where his descendants have been keeping perpetuating his memory since 1919, year of his decease, at the age of 118 years. The Protestant Church of Amparibe Famonjena is celebrating its 151st anniversary, right now in this year 2012. It was inaugurated in 1861, at a time when Christianity was still in its infancy, in the Kingdom of Imerina. It is among the oldest religious buildings in Antananarivo, which distinguish themselves with their architecture, typical of the Highlands of Madagascar in the 19th century. In referring to Raindraoto in his book "Royal Houses, Homes of the Great in Madagascar" http://books.google.fr/books?id=ID_2T5EMFBQC&pg=PA336&lpg=PA336&dq=e.baudin,Tribune,++riches+Hova+Tananarive&source=bl&ots=UtVFxxxVJV&sig=WNW-G62FMwa64OjbsPqwwQxpsRs&hl=en&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=e.baudin%2CTribune%2C%20%20riches%20Hova%20Tananarive&f=false Didier Nativel quotes a statement of Eugène Baudin published in "La Tribune de Madagascar" of 7th January, 1933: "He [Raindraoto] was one of the wealthiest Hova in Antananarivo. So he was very well known."Then, Didier Nativel adds:
"- in the Court of Radama I, as early as 1818.
- the first Malagasy to be converted to Christianity in the temple of Amparibe.
- he sold the land where Dr Villette's maternity was built".
The foregoing confirms what Raindraoto's descendants have always said about his huge wealth, his land patrimony and his great social achievement in the capital city and its surroundings. Please also note that Raindraoto was only 17 in 1818.
RAINDRAOTO had supposedly got married more than once. His wife RASEHENO gave RAINDRAOTO 8 children. RAVELO was the eldest and the only boy. (RAVELO's Death Certificate N°1740 was issued by the Court of 1st Instance of Antananarivo on October 8th, 1928). Here are the names of the children: Ravelo, Ramatoa Ramparany, Ramatoa Rafaratiana, Ramatoa Randako, Ramatoa Ravoavy, Ramatoa Rasoanalina, Ramatoa Ramanantenasoa, Ramatoa Rafara-Razaivelo.
TO SUM IT UP: RAINDRAOTO + RASEHENO ===>RAVELO (deceased 4 October 1928), RAMPARANY (deceased 10 July 1928), RAFARATIANA, RANDAKO (deceased 25 October 1937), RAVOAVY, RASOANALINA (deceased 8 June 1930), RAMANANTENASOA, RAFARA-RAZAIVELO (deceased 9 January 1938).
In the following link (in Malagasy) http://www.fonds-patrimoniaux.mg/gsdl/cgi-bin/library.cgi?e=d-01000-00---off-0butana--00-1----0-10-0---0---0direct-10---4-------0-1l--11-fi-50---20-about---01-2-1-00-0-0-11-1-0gbk-00&a=d&c=butana&cl=CL2.1.16 Pastor Andriamasinoro put forward the most salient features of RAINDRATO's life at Amparibe temple,on June 29, 1919. It was in the northern part of Isotry which borders Tsaralalana that Raindraoto and most of his children used to live. . RAVELO (1844 — 1928) had two unions. Dr RONSARD ANDRIAMANANA was the son he had from his relationship with RAMANANA. His second spouse, RAKALA, gave him two children: Dr. HIPPOLYTE RABESAIKY and RAMATOA RAMANANDRAIBE.
TO SUM IT UP: RAVELO + RAMANANA ===> DR RONSARD ANDRIAMANANA then, RAVELO + RAKALA ===> DR HIPPOLYTE RABESAIKY, RAMANANDRAIBE.
Dr Ronsard ANDRIAMANANA had six children from his marriage with Hélène RAVONIARISOA: HERBERT, EMILE, ANGELE, PHILIBERT, LUCIEN and DENIS. Of these six children, only HERBERT, ANGELE and DENIS had descendants. (See the complete family tree). TO SUM IT UP : Dr RONSARD ANDRIAMANANA + HELENE RAVONIARISOA ===> HERBERT, EMILE, ANGELE, PHILIBERT, LUCIEN, DENIS. In full colonial period Dr Ronsard Andriamanana (like his Malagasy colleagues of his generation) had been given the title of "4th class doctor of colonial times" for "A.M.I" or Indigenous Medical Assistance. The French acronym stands for "Assistance Médicale Indigène".The following links http://books.google.fr/books/about/Bulletin.html?id=Xm8vAAAAYAAJ&redir_esc=y http://fpm.refer.mg:8000/gsdl/ RAINDRAOTO was buried on June 29, 1919 in the large ancestral tomb at Tsaralalana. Death Certificate N°2398 issued by the Court of 1st Instance of Antananarivo on July 8th, 1919.
Here is a small part of the tomb, next to the big old house built in the early 186o's by Ravelo and his first wife, RAMANANA. Dr. Ronsard ANDRIAMANANA, the only child of the first union, undertook the finishing touch and the embellishments of the building and, after various changes, he gave the house its final appearance.
The black and white picture of the said ancestral house was taken in the 1950s. The same house in the coloured picture on the right is still there. It is part of the heritage of Ronsard ANDRIAMANANA's heirs. It would be aged between 130 and 140 years, nowadays in 2012. Not far from our ancestral house in Tsaralalana there's also the house of Bienvenu Rasoamanana, descendant of Rafara-Razaivelo, younger daughter of Raindraoto. Bienvenu is one of François Rasoamanana (12.03.1882 / 12.11.1948) and Suzanne Ravololona's 9 children. Here they are: Henriette Rasoavololomanana (28.08.1923), Bienvenu Rasoamanana, Bienaimé Rasoamanana (14.09.1930 / 11.02.1994), Ferdinand Rasoamanana, Fernand Rasoamanana, Jeanne Razaimanana (24.05.1929), Yvonne Rasoamanana (08.01.1933), Jacqueline Rasoamanana and Rodolphe Rasoamanana (13.03.946 / 16.11.2010). Hélène RAVONIARISOA, our grandmother and great-grandmother, was a descendant of the TSIMIAMBOHOLAHY of Ilafy , King ANDRIANAMPOINIMERINA's old advisors and companions in war and adventure. "Tsimiamboholahy" means "those who do not turn their backs on the opponent". Her great ancestor, ANDRIANTSILAVO (or Andriantsilavonandriana), used to be called "Andafiavaratra". This term which literally means "beyond the North", and more precisely, "beyond the Rova in the North" refers not only to a definite place on the northern side of the hill of Antananarivo, but also to the descendants of the people who used to live there. Andafiavaratra used to be considered a Hova high sphere. ANDRIANTSILAVO had six children. RAINIHARO, one of his sons, was Chief of the Army under Queen Ranavalona I before being Prime Minister. RAINIHARO had 4 children among whom was Prime minister RAINILAIARIVONY. RAINIHARO and RAINILAIARIVONY are both buried in the famous monument "Fasan-dRainiharo", in the district of Isoraka in Antananarivo. ANDRIANTSILAVO's fourth child, RAVAO, had 4 sons, among whom was Great Judge and Justice Minister RAINIMANANTOANINA. He is the first cousin of Prime minister RAINILAIARIVONY. TO SUM IT UP: ANDRIANTSILAVO ===> RAVAO ===> GREAT JUDGE RAINIMANANTOANINA. RAINIMANANTOANINA died on September 18th, 1893. Death Certificate N°2477 of September 4th, 1958. Transcription of the judgement N°817 of the "Tribunal de Droit Local du 1er Degré" in Antananarivo, on September 4th, 1958. We could not find Rainimanantoanina's birthdate anywhere, nor his photo either. The link below shows the names of Rainimanantoanina's 13 children. If either of you, the descendants of those 13 children, had those precious and unique documents and information, please be so kind as to contact us. That would be a super great piece of news for each and everyone of us, as this high-ranking, illustrious dignitary is our common ancestor. Here are the names of RAINIMANANTOANINA's 13 children: Ramanantoanina, Rainisoamiato, Raharimanana, Ramanantseheno, Andriamihamina, Rainizanatseheno, Ramatoa Rasoamananantony, Rahaingo, Ramatoa Rasoanary, Ramatoa Rasoahary, Ravony, Ramatoa Rasoanjanahary, Ramatoa Rasoavelondray.
